CONSULTATION

This page has been created to present the proposed repowering of two turbines at Robertshaw’s Farm Shop, Bradford, BD13 3SS.

Deploying reliable sources of renewable energy is crucial for the UK to meet its net zero targets, the current infrastructure in place is outdated, and in need of an upgrade. Repowering is a term used to describe the process of replacing existing renewable generation (i.e wind turbines) with newer technology. Repowering of wind turbines is a solution that takes advantage of favourable wind conditions, existing turbine sites, and can solve reliability issues for businesses across the UK.

Technology has significantly advanced over the last 10 years bringing newer, more efficient models to today’s market. Without significantly increasing overall tip height, newer turbines provide more energy with larger blades and minimal visual change, helping to meet the energy demand across the UK. Additionally, with the constrained grid network in the UK, adding a new turbine into the mix can take a very long time. However, repowered turbines provide a solution to this issue as existing grid infrastructure can be utilised, reducing connection delays.

Proposed Development

The repowering of the turbines present a larger rotor diameter with a minor increase in overall tip height.

The City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council have recognised the climate emergency, and consequently have set ambitious targets to transition to a low-carbon economy and society. As part of the Leeds City Region Climate Coalition, the council aims to achieve a net zero carbon region by 2038, with significant progress to be made by 2030. Therefore, the proposed repowering offers a suitable solution to business needs whilst also helping to achieve local energy targets set by the council.

The proposed repowering of two turbines at Robertshaw’s Farm shop will support the farm, and farm shop to meet climate targets. Any comments regarding this proposal are much appreciated.

PROJECT CONTACTS

Cogeo Planning & Environmental Services are working with H. Ambler & Sons Ltd. to complete the planning and environmental assessments required to gain planning permission from the Local Planning Authority, City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council.

H. Ambler & Sons

H. Ambler & Sons Ltd. are the owners of  two existing 50 kW Endurance turbines. The turbines are currently used to power both the working sheep farm and Robertshaw’s Farm Shop. However, the turbines have experienced a multitude of reliability issues since their installation. Due to the high demand of both the farm and the farm shop, the turbines are not providing enough energy to power the businesses. The repowering of the turbines aims to increase energy production onsite with the aim of the farm becoming energy sufficient.

PROPOSAL

The proposal seeks approval from City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council for the repowering of 2x 50kW Endurance turbines to 2x Vestas V27 turbines.
